Gold purity is measured in karats, with 24 karat (24K) being pure gold. The karat number tells you how many parts out of 24 are actual gold. For example, 18K gold is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals (typically copper, silver, or zinc), making it 75% pure gold.
Most gold jewelry is not 24K because pure gold is very soft. Lower karats are alloyed with harder metals to improve durability. Common jewelry karats include 10K (41.7% gold), 14K (58.3%), 18K (75%), and 22K (91.7%). Investment-grade gold bars and coins are typically 24K or .999 fine.
The melt value of gold is its raw metal value based solely on gold content and current spot price. Jewelry and collectible items may have additional value above melt based on craftsmanship, brand, age, or rarity. When selling to a dealer or refiner, expect to receive 85-95% of melt value to account for refining costs and margin.
Melt value is calculated by multiplying the weight in troy ounces by the gold purity (karat/24) and then by the current spot price. For example, 1 troy oz of 14K gold has a melt value of (14/24) x spot price.
Karats (K) measure gold purity — 24K is pure gold, 14K is 58.3% gold. Carats (ct) measure gemstone weight. They are completely different units despite the similar names.
The karat number indicates parts of gold out of 24. 24K is 99.9% pure gold. 18K is 75% gold (18/24). 14K is 58.3% gold (14/24). 10K is 41.7% gold (10/24). Lower karat gold is alloyed with other metals for durability.
No. Melt value is the raw metal value based on weight and purity. Dealers typically pay 85-95% of melt value to cover refining costs and their margin. Numismatic or collectible pieces may be worth more than melt value.
A troy ounce (31.1035 grams) is the standard unit for weighing precious metals. It is slightly heavier than a regular (avoirdupois) ounce (28.3495 grams). All spot prices are quoted per troy ounce.
